Is the Trek 7000 bicycle too out-of-date to use?
I bought a used Trek 7000 bike and it took immediately to a store to get an update. The mechanic said bikes are not made like that, even if it is a "large frame" and that I would be pushed too far forward.
You have misunderstood what he told you. I think he tried to tell you that the frame is too small, so you jam into the cockpit. If the frame is the right size for you, your position will be fine.

Rusk became involved in the ride after The Make-A-Wish Foundation granted Rusk’s nephew, Dylan, his wish to be a sheriff in 2007 as he battled leukemia. “My hope is to bring awareness of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and raise a few dollars to help the Foundation grant wishes to children. Despite blazing temperatures, Lakeland Village resident Dave Rusk set out today on his third “Ride For Wishes” solo motorcycle trip to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Orange County and the Inland Empire. “I ride because I want other kids and families to be able to experience and see how a difficult time in life can be changed with one wish,” Rusk said. Watching his nephew have his wish granted made Rusk realize what a dream come true can do for someone. Along the way, he’ll visit different Make-A-Wish Chapters and keep a blog, updated regularly with pictures throughout his ride. After a few months he got new tires, and I put an old (but newer than this bike) crank on it. Then new stem, new seat, pedals, all sorts of random odds and ends to keep him riding. It started as a bike path bike. But NOW we are converting this frame into a Hybrid bike he can ride with his kids on the local rail-trails with his kids. I have used every spare part in my parts bin, every trick in the trade. We have struggled to keep this bike rideable. He started riding when he hired me last year. I obviously wanted to keep him riding because he was who I usually rode with.
